2010 comes forward as a key year for the future of cetaceans, particularly for whales. In 2007, the International Whaling Commission began, at its 59th annual meeting in Anchorage, Alaska, a process of modernization of the convention. For the countries that still practice whaling, despite the moratorium on commercial whaling that has been implemented since 1986, this process should take them to the origins of the IWC, when only whaling was regulated.

As every year, in January, part of Fundación Cethus’ team was studying Commerson's dolphins (Cephalorhynchus commersonii) in Puerto San Julián, Santa Cruz province, which during spring-summer time visit the waters of Bahía San Julián to mate and give birth to their calves.
The activities carried out as part of the fieldwork are varied. Whenever the unstable Patagonian climate allowed us, we went on board in search of Commerson's dolphins. Fortunately this species is very inquisitive and quite often interacts with vessels, which facilitates our work.
Between March 13th and 25th, the 15th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) took place in Doha, Qatar. Although Fundación Cethus, unlike other meetings, could not participate in a direct way, Vanesa Tossenberger, one of our members, was present as an advisor of the Argentinean Delegation.
