Those of us who are part of Fundación Cethus were always worried about the fact that, at present, whales and dolphins in the world are still been killed, and that is why we work to present proposals and, to our understanding, some solutions that may help us to mitigate in some way, some of the threats faced by dolphins and whales in nowadays... |

This season, by the third consecutive year, we were overflying the Golfo San Jorge to photoidentify the whales that visit the northern waters of the province of Santa Cruz. These activities were possible thanks to the financing of IFAW and WDCS and the support of the Prefectura Naval Argentina. The Southern right whales (SRW) are identified through the callosities of the head, which, like our fingerprints, are unique to each individual. The use of the photo-identification technique is very important for scientists, not only because it allows to know each individual by their physical characteristics, but also because it helps to know much about their biology, such as reproductive parameters, longevity, habitat use and fidelity to different areas.
Between August 17th and 31st, 2009, Miguel Iñíguez, Fundación Cethus’ president and Alternate Commissioner of Argentina to the International Whaling Commission, traveled to Panama to carry out the third stage of FOAR (Fondo Argentino de Cooperación Horizontal) mission to that country. These missions are carried out as part of the cooperation between Argentina and Panama, and also under the "Latin American Cooperation Strategy for the Conservation of Cetaceans" which was signed in December 2007 in Buenos Aires. Between 22nd and 23rd September of 2009, the VI Buenos Aires Group meeting was held which was convened by the delegation of Argentina to the International Whaling Commission (IWC). The Buenos Aires Group (GBA) was created in the homonym city in 2005 with the aim of coordinating positions among Latin American countries in relation to the IWC and the conservation of cetaceans. Government representatives from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Mexico, Panama, Peru, Dominican Republic and Uruguay attended the VI meeting. |
