For ten years now, we've conducting the Southern right whale (Eubalaena australis) project, and last July, we carried out our eighth aerial census in the south of Golfo San Jorge in order to photoidentify the southern right whales that visit these waters. To our surprise, we count 14 individuals, the higher number since 2007 when we conducted our first aerial survey

On July 26th, we carried out the eighth aerial survey at the southern area of Golfo San Jorge with the support of the Prefectura Naval Argentina. This time we have been fortunate to watch 14 southern right whale individuals. It is noteworthy that one adult was an albino, and we were also able to identify an adult along with a juvenile. Albinos are easier to identify...
Studying the ecology and behavior of cetaceans in their natural environment through visual observation methods is not an easy task because these animals spend about 95% of their time submerged, and many of them inhabit remote and inaccessible areas. However, nowadays more than ever, acoustic monitoring methods can solve some of the limitations of traditional visual methods... |
