Study and Conservation of Southern right whale (Eubalaena australis) in Santa Cruz Province, Argentine Patagonia

Between January 25 th and February 8 th, 2008, fieldwork was carried out in Santa Cruz Province as part of the Southern Right whale Project. The campaign took place in CaboVírgenes, where we could see Southern right whales (Eubalaena australis) and other cetaceans such as Commerson's dolphins (Cephalorhynchus commersonii) and Peale's dolphins (Lagenorhynchus australis).

We also took this opportunity to provide an introductory talk on whales and the Southern right whale Project, at the detachment of the Prefectura Argentina (Coast Guard) located in the Cabo Vírgenes Natural Provintial Reserve. This talk aimed to the local, provintial and general public. As part of the activities that were conducted during this period of work, the first census of whales in the area of the Bajo Mazarredo was carried out through a navigation in the area aboard a coastguard of the Prefectura Naval Argentina, where we could see Commerson's and Peale's dolphins. We also took advantage of this opportunity to make an inventory of birds sighted during the navigation. This census is very important since it constitutes the first census of whales in the area.

The results obtained during the fieldwork contributed in a very important way to the study that the Fundacion Cethus has been carrying out for many years in the Santa Cruz Province, in addition to indicate us that the whole coast of the province would be very important for the Southern right whale.
This campaign was financed thanks to the contribution of Petrobras Energia SA.
